2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts rocked Tulsa, OK recently bringing their brand of three chord rock ‘n roll that never goes out of style. Joan is still proving that girls can rock just as hard as the boys do and her rock anthems “Bad Reputation”, “Cherry Bomb” and “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” are still standing the test of time and reaching a whole new generation.
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts played a hard rocking 19 song set for their Oklahoma fans. The band kicked off the set perfectly with their high energy hit “Bad Reputation” which fired up the fans and brought them to the front of the stage. Guitarist Dougie Needles was making his impressive mid-air jumps during the second song “Cherry Bomb”, while Joan came to the edge of the stage to greet the fans, playing her low slung guitar like a bad ass. “Hello daddy, hello mom, I’m your ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch cherry bomb” is just one of the brilliant lyrical hooks written by Jett in her first band The Runaways, still as current today as it was in 1976. Rock star Dave Grohl performed the song with Jett at her 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction adding his own raspy, sand paper growl to the verses.
The band played all of the older hits including “Light Of Day” which was written by Bruce Springsteen for Jett to sing in the movie Light of Day which she starred in with Michael J. Fox. In 2013 Joan Jett & The Blackhearts released their 11th full length studio album titled Unvarnished which was heavily represented in the set with seven tracks including the heavy guitar riff oriented “Fragile”, “Any Weather” written with Dave Grohl and “Make It Back” which Jett explained was written about Hurricane Sandy that devastated her home town and inspired her to write the song.
The top 10 hit “I Hate Myself For Loving You” closed out the set along with the monster hits “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” which spent an impressive 7 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Music chart and “Crimson & Clover” which spent 2 weeks at #7. The band returned to the stage for a 3 song encore of “Real Wild Child”, Joan’s top 40 hit “Everyday People” and new song “Different”. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts will be on tour all summer long with Heart and Cheap Trick on the Rock Hall Three For All Tour. Tickets on sale now! photos by Michael Ervin
