It’s hard to believe it has been 11 years since Carrie Underwood won American Idol’s 2004 season. She has gone on to become one of the biggest country music stars in the world and rightfully so. Her fans are hard core, her talent is undeniable and she has built a very impressive career.
After rousing sets by openers The Swon Brothers and Easton Corbin the lights dimmed and AC/DC’s “Back In Black” blasted the arena. Carrie slowly ascended from beneath the stage to deafening screams and tore into her hit single “Renegade Runaway”. This concert was “in the round” and the stage was massive, stretching from one end of the arena to the other and Carrie worked the hometown audience from all sides. With this stage setup there was not a bad seat in the house. Carrie played all of the hits and 8 or 9 songs from her incredible new album Storyteller with “Choctaw County Affair” being one of the crowd favorites as Carrie played some amazing harmonica throughout the song.
Carrie descended under the stage to change clothes after every 4 or 5 songs while her band entertained the crowd with some great instrumentals from the new album. The light show, pyrotechnics and visual effects were very impressive. About halfway through her show Carrie took a moment to talk about the artist who is one of country music’s all time greatest storytellers and a huge inspiration to Carrie’s own career, none other than the incredible Dolly Parton. To pay tribute Carrie wowed the Tulsa fans with an amazing, spot on rendition of Dolly’s “I Will Always Love You”. She started the song acapella and finished to a deafening roar of applause from the hometown crowd. This was definitely a highlight of the evening and a breathtaking display of Carrie’s phenomenal vocal talent.
Carrie ended the show with smash hit “Before He Cheats” and returned to the stage for the 2 song encore of “Smoke Break” and “Something In The Water”. I have to say that I was just a casual fan before this show but now I am a fan for life or a “Care Bear” as the hard core fans call themselves. This was an amazing show and worth every penny of admission. I highly recommend that everyone see the mind blowing Storyteller tour, you will not be disappointed. photos & review by Michael Ervin
