GARTH BROOKS TAKES OVER THE BOK CENTER
Garth Brooks is the world’s greatest entertainer just as much as he is your friendly next door neighbor. His shows are spectacular and he is the most generous and giving man I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. You can only imagine my excitement when news of him coming out of retirement hit the media. Not only that but once tour dates were announced in Tulsa I was very excited and couldn’t wait for the day of the first show. The tour he is on now has played to sold out crowds for multiple nights in every city. There is not another living entertainer that can pull in those kinds of crowds. All of Tulsa has been talking about his new shows and new album for quite some time just waiting for 1/09/15, the day of the first show.
I was lucky enough to attend that first show and as we sat down in our seats you could just feel the energy and excitement throughout the sold out crowd of 17,500. We all stared anxiously at the rotating “G” on the screens and then suddenly the lights went out and a countdown started on the video screen. After the countdown, a silhouette of the man himself appeared on the screens singing the opening track of his new album of the same name “Man Against Machine”. The screen went blank as the band members started shuffling in and a few minutes later the man all of Tulsa had come to see appeared from below the stage just staring at the crowd before kicking into the first song. Immediately running down to shake the hands of some audience members, Garth already had everyone hooked.
The next song was his huge hit “Rodeo” and the crowd went nuts as as he played the first notes and they didn’t give up for the whole song. Garth told us in the press conference that he would be playing all of the old stuff, and he wasn’t kidding. He performed a massive set list of old favorites, including the 3rd song in the set “Two Of A Kind (Working On A Full House)”. The crowd was drowning Brooks out during “The River” as he introduced Garth 101 to us. We were also treated to a sing along version of the hit “Unanswered Prayers” and with lyrics like “Some Of God’s Greatest Gifts Are Unanswered Prayers”, how could you not love this guy? The show was just over 2 hours long but seemed to go by very quickly. The crowd could have stayed and listened to him all night long.
Not only did we get to see Garth, we were also treated to a short set by his superstar wife Trisha Yearwood, or Ms. Yearwood as Garth would say. She sounded so great on her hits and it was a very surreal experience getting to see these 2 huge icons in one place. Garth played guitar for Trisha and then took over the stage again to play “Shameless”. He finished off his huge set with “Standing Outside The Fire” and I did NOT want it to end. I was enjoying every second of this fantastic show. Everything about it was simply perfect from the production, to the band, the songs and the man himself, this show was amazing.
Garth Brooks’ show was easily the best I have ever been to. There is no topping it. Do yourself a gigantic favor and get tickets to see this show when it comes to your town. Whether you enjoy country music or not, this is a show you do not want to miss. by David Rader
